History

For more than 33 years, Newport County residents have embraced Lucy’s Hearth, stocking its shelves with greatly needed clothing, toys, and food.

Our History

Lucy’s Hearth was incorporated in 1984 and opened as an overnight shelter with one staff person and a dedicated group of volunteers. As need increased, we became a 24-hour shelter and expanded. In 2007, to broaden our programming and administrative capacity, we affiliated with non-profit Family Service of Rhode Island while remaining a separate 501 (c) (3) non-profit agency.

In 2011, for the first time in our history, we were accredited by the Council On Accreditation.  We received our re-accreditation in 2014.

In 2016,  Lucy’s Hearth moved into a newly renovated facility located at 19 Valley Road in Middletown.  The 9,300 square foot building situated on 2.2 acres contains 16 efficiency and one-bedroom units for families, updated common areas, staff offices and donation center.  The newly renovated common areas for the families include a commercial kitchen, dining room, indoor play area, learning center, teen lounge and two playgrounds.  The donation center includes space for clothing, household items, toiletries, infant care supplies and food.
